  1. A child writes 52 − 17 = 45. The likely misconception is —

    1. a reading problem
    2. subtracting the smaller digit from the larger in each column
    3. adding instead of subtracting
    4. a random slip

उत्तर: (b) subtracting the smaller digit from the larger in each column. 7 − 2 = 5 in the ones column; correct answer 35.

  2. A child writes 1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5. The error is —

    1. wrong LCM
    2. careless slip
    3. wrong reading
    4. adding numerators and denominators

उत्तर: (d) adding numerators and denominators. Correct answer is 5/6.

  3. A child says 0.25 > 0.5. The misconception is that —

    1. longer decimals are larger
    2. decimals are fractions
    3. zero has no value
    4. digits are equal

उत्तर: (a) longer decimals are larger. Length of decimal does not decide size.

  4. Errors that repeat in a pattern are called —

    1. careless slips
    2. systematic errors
    3. random errors
    4. typing errors

Systematic errors point to misconceptions.

  5. The first step in error analysis is to —

    1. collect students’ work and errors
    2. punish students
    3. ignore errors
    4. give marks

उत्तर: (a) collect students’ work and errors. Collect, classify, then diagnose.

  6. Asking a student to explain their method helps to —

    1. reveal the reasoning behind the error
    2. embarrass the student
    3. save time only
    4. avoid teaching

उत्तर: (a) reveal the reasoning behind the error. Explanations show misconceptions.

  7. Errors from wrong steps in a correct method are —

    1. conceptual errors
    2. procedural errors
    3. language errors
    4. misreading

Procedural errors involve wrong steps.

  8. Errors should be treated as —

    1. proof of laziness
    2. reasons to punish
    3. unimportant
    4. information for teaching

उत्तर: (d) information for teaching. Errors guide teaching.

  9. After reteaching, the teacher should —

    1. give a lower grade
    2. change the syllabus
    3. give similar items to check whether the error repeats
    4. move on without checking

उत्तर: (c) give similar items to check whether the error repeats. Recheck shows whether remediation worked.

  10. Treating a systematic error as a careless slip leads to —

    1. the misconception remaining
    2. faster learning
    3. better scores
    4. correct teaching
