BOOK-GUIDED ORIGINAL SSC MATHS PRACTICE — Trains
FOUNDATION
Time to cross a platform = (train length + platform length) / speed.
METHOD
Identify the quantities given, choose the exact relationship, calculate in the same unit, then check the answer against the question.
WORKED EXAMPLE 1
A 272 m train crosses a 50 m platform at 23 m/s. Time (seconds)?
Distance to clear platform = 272+50=322 m. Time = 322/23 = 14 s.
WORKED EXAMPLE 2
A 466 m train crosses a 80 m platform at 14 m/s. Time (seconds)?
Distance to clear platform = 466+80=546 m. Time = 546/14 = 39 s.
IMPORTANT EXCEPTION / COMMON TRAP
Convert km/h to m/s using 5/18 when needed.
QUICK REVISION
Time to cross a platform = (train length + platform length) / speed.
