BOOK-GUIDED ORIGINAL SSC MATHS PRACTICE — Boats and Streams
FOUNDATION
Still-water speed = (downstream + upstream speeds)/2.
METHOD
Identify the quantities given, choose the exact relationship, calculate in the same unit, then check the answer against the question.
WORKED EXAMPLE 1
Boat speeds downstream and upstream are 37 and 7 km/h. Find still-water speed.
Still-water speed = (37+7)/2 = 22 km/h.
WORKED EXAMPLE 2
Boat speeds downstream and upstream are 59 and 3 km/h. Find still-water speed.
Still-water speed = (59+3)/2 = 31 km/h.
IMPORTANT EXCEPTION / COMMON TRAP
Downstream speed exceeds upstream for positive current.
QUICK REVISION
Still-water speed = (downstream + upstream speeds)/2.
