FOUNDATION

Combined work rate = 1/a + 1/b jobs/day.

METHOD

Identify the quantities given, choose the exact relationship, calculate in the same unit, then check the answer against the question.

WORKED EXAMPLE 1

A finishes a job in 912 days and B in 1824 days. How many days together?

Combined rate = 1/912+1/1824=1/608 job/day; time = 608 days.

WORKED EXAMPLE 2

A finishes a job in 1311 days and B in 2622 days. How many days together?

Combined rate = 1/1311+1/2622=1/874 job/day; time = 874 days.

IMPORTANT EXCEPTION / COMMON TRAP

Add rates, never add completion times.

QUICK REVISION
