Overview
Effective questioning stimulates thinking, checks understanding and involves all learners; good communication makes classrooms interactive.
Key points
- Closed (convergent) questions have one answer; open (divergent) questions invite many answers.
- Higher-order questions ask students to analyse, evaluate or create.
- Wait time of about three seconds or more after a question improves answers (Mary Budd Rowe).
- Probing questions ask for reasons; redirecting passes a question to other students.
- Socratic questioning develops reasoning through dialogue.
- Teachers should respond to wrong answers supportively.
Explanation
- Questions should be clear and suited to learners’ level.
- Encourage students to ask questions too.
- Distribute questions across the class, not just to volunteers.
- Non-verbal communication (eye contact, tone) matters.
- Active listening builds trust.
Step by step
- Identify the concept or theory the situation is testing.
- Recall the thinker, principle or policy behind it.
- Prefer options that are child-centred, inclusive and evidence-based; reject punitive or rote options.
Examples
- "Why do you think the leaves turned yellow?" → open, higher-order question.
- Teacher waits a few seconds before calling on anyone → wait time.
- "Can you explain how you got that answer?" → probing question.
Traps and advanced points
- Trap: Asking only recall questions.
- Trap: Answering one’s own question too quickly.
- Trap: Calling only on the same students.
Quick revision
- Open vs closed.
- Wait time ~3 seconds.
- Probe and redirect.
