Measurement and Scales
Research Skills
Useful for: UGC NET, CSIR NET, Central Univ./IIT/NIT Faculty, OPSC Assistant Professor, OPSC PGT, OSSC Art Education Instructor, OSSC Economics, OSSC English
Overview
Research tools collect data; measurement assigns numbers or categories to variables using appropriate scales.
Key points
- Stevens (1946) described four scales: nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio.
- Nominal: categories (gender); ordinal: ranks; interval: equal intervals without true zero (temperature in °C); ratio: true zero (height, income).
- The Likert scale (Rensis Likert, 1932) uses agreement levels, commonly five points.
- Questionnaires are self-administered; interview schedules are filled by the researcher.
- Observation schedules record behaviour systematically.
- Tools must be piloted and checked for reliability and validity.
Explanation
- Open-ended items give depth; closed items are easier to analyse.
- Avoid double-barrelled and leading questions.
- Semantic differential scales use opposite adjectives.
- Sociometry maps relationships in a group (Moreno).
- The scale decides which statistics are allowed.
Step by step
- Identify the concept, method or policy asked.
- Recall the definition, thinker, year or rule.
- Apply it to the situation and eliminate extreme options.
Examples
- Class rank → ordinal scale.
- Marks out of 100 with a true zero → ratio scale.
- "Do you like the teacher and the textbook?" → double-barrelled question.
Traps and advanced points
- Trap: Calling temperature a ratio scale.
- Trap: Leading questions.
- Trap: Skipping the pilot.
Quick revision
- Nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio (Stevens 1946).
- Likert 1932.
- Pilot test tools.

- Changing the unit can remove an instrument error.
- Report only the precision supported by the instrument and repeat measurements when random variation matters.
- A single reading is always sufficient regardless of variability.
- A measurement is meaningful only when the quantity, unit, instrument resolution and method are appropriate to the purpose.

Answer: (b) Report only the precision supported by the instrument and repeat measurements when random variation matters.. A measurement is meaningful only when the quantity, unit, instrument resolution and method are appropriate to the purpose. Report only the precision supported by the instrument and repeat measurements when random variation matters. This question tests whether the method and conclusion match the evidence. For Measurement, distinguish what is actually measured or controlled from what is merely assumed, and report only what the data and method justify.
In scientific reasoning, which statement about Measurement is NOT appropriate?
- A measurement is meaningful only when the quantity, unit, instrument resolution and method are appropriate to the purpose.
- Report only the precision supported by the instrument and repeat measurements when random variation matters.
- A single reading is always sufficient regardless of variability.
- The method should be chosen according to the question, evidence and limitations relevant to Measurement.
