BOOK-GUIDED ORIGINAL SSC MATHS PRACTICE — Heights and Distances
FOUNDATION
tan θ = height / horizontal distance.
METHOD
Identify the quantities given, choose the exact relationship, calculate in the same unit, then check the answer against the question.
WORKED EXAMPLE 1
A ladder of 660 m reaches a wall with its foot 528 m away. What height (m)?
By right-triangle relation, height = √(660²−528²) = √156816 = 396 m.
WORKED EXAMPLE 2
A ladder of 1370 m reaches a wall with its foot 1096 m away. What height (m)?
By right-triangle relation, height = √(1370²−1096²) = √675684 = 822 m.
IMPORTANT EXCEPTION / COMMON TRAP
Identify the measured angle before selecting tan/sin/cos.
QUICK REVISION
tan θ = height / horizontal distance.
