BOOK-GUIDED ORIGINAL SSC MATHS PRACTICE — Ratio and Proportion
FOUNDATION
If A:B = a:b, their shares of total T are aT/(a+b) and bT/(a+b).
METHOD
Identify the quantities given, choose the exact relationship, calculate in the same unit, then check the answer against the question.
WORKED EXAMPLE 1
₹612 is divided between A and B in ratio 7:11. Find A’s share (₹).
Total parts = 7+11=18; A gets 7/18 × 612 = ₹238.
WORKED EXAMPLE 2
₹1062 is divided between A and B in ratio 10:8. Find A’s share (₹).
Total parts = 10+8=18; A gets 10/18 × 1062 = ₹590.
IMPORTANT EXCEPTION / COMMON TRAP
A ratio represents parts, not absolute amounts.
QUICK REVISION
