BOOK-GUIDED ORIGINAL SSC MATHS PRACTICE — Mixtures and Alligation

FOUNDATION

Conserve quantity of each component when mixing.

METHOD

Identify the quantities given, choose the exact relationship, calculate in the same unit, then check the answer against the question.

WORKED EXAMPLE 1

A vessel has 143 L milk and 65 L water. How many litres of water should be added so the milk:water ratio becomes 11:17?

Milk remains 143 L. Target water = 143×(17/11)=221 L. Water to add = 221−65=156 L.

WORKED EXAMPLE 2

A vessel has 195 L milk and 45 L water. How many litres of water should be added so the milk:water ratio becomes 13:12?

Milk remains 195 L. Target water = 195×(12/13)=180 L. Water to add = 180−45=135 L.

IMPORTANT EXCEPTION / COMMON TRAP

Do not average concentration percentages without weighting volumes.

QUICK REVISION

Conserve quantity of each component when mixing.

    Answer: (b) 14. Milk remains 140 L. Target water = 140×(5/10)=70 L. Water to add = 70−56=14 L.

  5. 20 L of a 30% salt solution is mixed with 10 L of a 60% salt solution. What is the resulting salt percentage

    1. 40%
    2. 35%
    3. 45%
    4. 50%
