BOOK-GUIDED ORIGINAL SSC MATHS PRACTICE — Average

FOUNDATION

Average = sum of observations / number of observations.

METHOD

Identify the quantities given, choose the exact relationship, calculate in the same unit, then check the answer against the question.

WORKED EXAMPLE 1

The average of 16 numbers is 29. If 216 is added, find the new average.

Original sum = 16×29=464. New sum = 464+216=680; divide by 17 = 40.

WORKED EXAMPLE 2

The average of 8 numbers is 47. If 128 is added, find the new average.

Original sum = 8×47=376. New sum = 376+128=504; divide by 9 = 56.

IMPORTANT EXCEPTION / COMMON TRAP

When adding a new observation the count also increases.

QUICK REVISION

Average = sum of observations / number of observations.
