Missing / Variable DI

Quantitative Aptitude / DI · Mains Data Analysis

Useful for: IBPS Banking

Overview

Missing-data DI hides some values; you recover them from totals, ratios or percentages before answering.

Key points

  • Row or column totals give missing entries by subtraction.
  • Ratios between items give missing values by proportion.
  • Percent shares of a total give values by multiplication.
  • Fill all missing values first if several questions use them.
  • Variable DI may ask for a range of possible values.

Explanation

  • Write equations when two values are missing.
  • Check that filled values are positive and reasonable.
  • Keep a clean filled table.
  • For ranges, use the extreme cases.

Step by step

  1. Translate the data or statement into numbers.
  2. Compute step by step with the right formula.
  3. Compare with options; check reasonableness.

Examples

  • Total 200; A = 50, B = 70 → C = 80.
  • A : B = 3 : 5 and A = 60 → B = 100.
  • Share of C is 35% of a total of 400 → C = 140.

Traps and advanced points

  • Trap: Forgetting a hidden total.
  • Trap: Proportion set up the wrong way.
  • Trap: Answering before filling all cells.

Quick revision

  • Totals → subtraction.
  • Ratios → proportion.
  • % share × total.
