Data Comparison

Quantitative Aptitude / DI · Mains Data Analysis

Useful for: IBPS Banking

Overview

Data comparison questions compare growth, shares or performance across two or more datasets.

Key points

  • Absolute change = new − old; percentage change = (new − old)/old × 100.
  • A larger absolute increase may still be a smaller percentage increase.
  • Compare shares by converting to percentages of the same total.
  • Ratios compare two quantities directly.
  • Average growth over years: total change ÷ number of years (for simple averages).

Explanation

  • Read whether the question asks absolute or percentage comparison.
  • Use approximation to rank.
  • Watch for different base years.
  • Check units in both datasets.

Step by step

  1. Translate the data or statement into numbers.
  2. Compute step by step with the right formula.
  3. Compare with options; check reasonableness.

Examples

  • A grows from 100 to 120 (20%); B from 200 to 230 (15%) → A has the higher percentage growth.
  • B’s absolute increase (30) is larger than A’s (20).
  • Shares: 45 of 150 = 30% vs 60 of 240 = 25% → first is larger.

Traps and advanced points

  • Trap: Confusing absolute and percentage change.
  • Trap: Different bases.
  • Trap: Ignoring units.

Quick revision

  • Absolute vs %.
  • Same base for shares.
  • Approximate to rank.
