Quantitative Aptitude / DI · Mains Data Analysis
Useful for: IBPS Banking
Overview
A caselet gives data in a paragraph; converting it into a table makes every question quick.
Key points
- Identify categories (e.g. male/female, departments, years).
- Fill values given directly first, then derived ones.
- Check that row and column totals match the given totals.
- Percentages usually refer to a specific subgroup — note the base.
- Keep units consistent.
Explanation
- Use a two-way table for two classifications.
- Write percentages as fractions where possible.
- Answer all questions from the same table.
- Recheck one total before submitting.
Step by step
- Translate the data or statement into numbers.
- Compute step by step with the right formula.
- Compare with options; check reasonableness.
Examples
- 500 employees, 60% male; 25% of males and 40% of females are graduates → 75 + 80 = 155 graduates.
- Of 200 students, 120 like tea; 70 like both tea and coffee; 30 like neither → coffee lovers = 200 − 30 − (120 − 70) = 120.
- A shop sold 400 items: 30% online, rest offline; 25% of offline were returns → offline returns = 70.
Traps and advanced points
- Trap: Applying a percentage to the wrong base.
- Trap: Not using a table.
- Trap: Totals not matching.
Quick revision
- Paragraph → table.
