Overview
Blood-relation questions are solved fastest by drawing a family tree with generations and genders marked.
Key points
- Same generation: brother, sister, cousin; one up: father, mother, uncle, aunt; one down: son, daughter, nephew, niece.
- Father’s or mother’s brother = uncle (paternal or maternal); father’s or mother’s sister = aunt.
- Brother’s or sister’s son = nephew; daughter = niece.
- Spouse’s parents are parents-in-law; sibling’s spouse is brother- or sister-in-law.
- Gender is often unknown — do not assume it unless stated.
Explanation
- "Only son of my grandfather" is the speaker’s father (if the speaker’s parent is that son).
- Mark generations by levels so that relations like grandfather appear two levels up.
- Check whether the relation is asked from A to B or B to A.
- If gender is not given, the answer may be "cannot be determined".
Step by step
- Draw the tree from each statement.
- Locate the two people.
- Name the relation in the asked direction.
Examples
- Pointing to a man, Rita says, "He is the son of my mother’s only brother." The man is Rita’s cousin.
- A is B’s sister; C is B’s mother; D is C’s father → A is D’s granddaughter.
- X is the brother of Y; Y is the daughter of Z → X is Z’s son.
Traps and advanced points
- Trap: Assuming a gender that is not stated.
- Trap: Reversing the direction of the relation.
- Trap: Skipping a generation in the tree.
Quick revision
- Draw generations.
- Mark gender only when given.
- Read "A is __ of B" carefully.
