Overview

DI tests quick percentages, ratios and averages read from a table or chart — accurate reading matters more than heavy calculation.

Key points

  • Percentage change = (new − old)/old × 100.
  • Share in a pie chart: angle/360 × 100 %, or value = angle/360 × total.
  • Average across years = total ÷ number of years.
  • Ratio questions: write both values and simplify.
  • Use approximation when options are far apart.

Explanation

  • Check units (thousands, crores, %) before comparing.
  • Growth over several years: compare each year with its own previous year, not the first year, unless asked.
  • For "how many times", divide; for "how much more", subtract.
  • In mixed charts, read the legend carefully.

Step by step

  1. Locate the data.
  2. Apply percentage, ratio or average.
  3. Check units in the answer.

Examples

  • Sales were 400 in 2019 and 500 in 2020: increase = 100/400 × 100 = 25%.
  • A pie-chart sector of 72° represents 72/360 × 100 = 20% of the total.
  • Values 120, 150, 180 over three years: average = 450/3 = 150.

Traps and advanced points

  • Trap: Using the new value as the base for percentage change.
  • Trap: Ignoring units such as "in thousands".
  • Trap: Reading a neighbouring bar or row.

Quick revision

  • % change on the old value.
  • Angle/360 for pie share.
  • Approximate when options differ widely.
