BOOK-GUIDED ORIGINAL SSC MATHS PRACTICE — Statistics: Mean and Median
FOUNDATION
For ordered odd-numbered data, median is the middle observation.
METHOD
Identify the quantities given, choose the exact relationship, calculate in the same unit, then check the answer against the question.
WORKED EXAMPLE 1
Find the median of 34, 38, 42, 46, 50.
There are 5 already ordered observations; position (5+1)/2=3. Median=42.
WORKED EXAMPLE 2
Find the median of 53, 70, 87, 104, 121, 138, 155.
There are 7 already ordered observations; position (7+1)/2=4. Median=104.
IMPORTANT EXCEPTION / COMMON TRAP
Sort observations before finding the median.
QUICK REVISION
For ordered odd-numbered data, median is the middle observation.
