BOOK-GUIDED ORIGINAL SSC MATHS PRACTICE — Quadratic Equations
FOUNDATION
For x² − Sx + P = 0, the sum of roots is S and product P.
METHOD
Identify the quantities given, choose the exact relationship, calculate in the same unit, then check the answer against the question.
WORKED EXAMPLE 1
Find the larger root of x² − 17x + 72 = 0.
Find two numbers with sum 17, product 72: 8 and 9. Hence (x−8)(x−9)=0; larger root 9.
WORKED EXAMPLE 2
Find the larger root of x² − 33x + 266 = 0.
Find two numbers with sum 33, product 266: 19 and 14. Hence (x−19)(x−14)=0; larger root 19.
IMPORTANT EXCEPTION / COMMON TRAP
A quadratic can have equal roots or no real roots.
QUICK REVISION
For x² − Sx + P = 0, the sum of roots is S and product P.
