Probability & Permutation Basics

Quantitative Aptitude / DI · Advanced Quant / Data

Useful for: IBPS Banking

Overview

Permutations count arrangements, combinations count selections, and probability divides favourable by total outcomes.

Key points

  • nPr = n!/(n − r)!; nCr = n!/[r!(n − r)!].
  • Arrangements of n letters with repeats: n!/(p! q! …).
  • Probability = favourable ÷ total equally likely outcomes.
  • Circular arrangements of n objects: (n − 1)!.
  • nCr = nC(n − r).

Explanation

  • "Committee/selection" → combination; "arrangement/order" → permutation.
  • Treat items that must stay together as one unit.
  • For "at least one", use 1 − P(none).
  • Cards: 52 cards, 4 kings, 26 red.

Step by step

  1. Translate the data or statement into numbers.
  2. Compute step by step with the right formula.
  3. Compare with options; check reasonableness.

Examples

  • Arrangements of the letters of BANK = 4! = 24.
  • Choosing 2 people from 5 = 5C2 = 10.
  • Arrangements of APPLE = 5!/2! = 60.

Traps and advanced points

  • Trap: Using permutation for selections.
  • Trap: Forgetting to divide for repeated letters.
  • Trap: Linear formula for circular arrangements.

Quick revision

  • nPr order; nCr selection.
  • Repeats → divide.
  • Circle → (n − 1)!.
