Oceanography

Geography

Useful for: UPSC Civil Services, OSSC RHT — Regular High School Teacher, OSEPA Upper Primary — Arts, OSSC Geography, OSSSC Govt TGT Arts, SSB Lecturer (Degree Colleges), SSB TGT Arts

Overview

Oceanography covers ocean floor relief, temperature and salinity, currents and tides, and features like coral reefs.

Key points

  • Ocean floor: continental shelf, slope, rise, abyssal plain, trenches; the Mariana Trench’s Challenger Deep is the deepest point (about 11 km).
  • Average ocean salinity is about 35 parts per thousand.
  • Warm currents: Gulf Stream, Kuroshio; cold currents: Labrador, Humboldt (Peru), Benguela, Canary, California.
  • Spring tides occur at new and full moon; neap tides at the quarter phases.
  • Coral reefs need warm, clear, shallow, salty water.
  • Cold currents along west coasts of continents help form coastal deserts (e.g. Atacama with the Humboldt Current).

Explanation

  • Upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich water supports fisheries (e.g. off Peru).
  • Salinity is higher in enclosed, hot, dry seas.
  • El Niño weakens Peruvian upwelling.
  • Coral bleaching follows heat stress.
  • Thermohaline circulation links global oceans.

Step by step

  1. Identify the concept, law or fact asked.
  2. Recall the definition, formula, example or year.
  3. Apply it and eliminate mismatched options.

Examples

  • Statement: "Spring tides occur at the half-moon phases." → Incorrect (new and full moon).
  • Statement: "The Humboldt Current is a cold current." → Correct.
  • Statement: "Average ocean salinity is about 35 parts per thousand." → Correct.

Traps and advanced points

  • Trap: Mixing spring and neap tides.
  • Trap: Calling the Gulf Stream cold.
  • Trap: Placing corals in cold, deep water.

Quick revision

  • Challenger Deep ~11 km.
  • Salinity ~35‰.
  • Spring tide: new/full moon.
