Overview

The atmosphere is layered by temperature; the Earth’s heat budget balances incoming solar radiation with outgoing terrestrial radiation.

Key points

  • Composition: nitrogen about 78%, oxygen about 21%, argon about 0.93%, carbon dioxide about 0.04%.
  • Troposphere: weather layer, average height about 13 km (about 8 km at poles, 18 km at the equator); temperature falls with height.
  • Stratosphere contains the ozone layer; temperature rises with height.
  • Mesosphere is the coldest layer; meteors burn up there; the thermosphere contains the ionosphere that reflects radio waves.
  • Albedo is the fraction of radiation reflected; fresh snow has high albedo.
  • Over a year the Earth radiates as much energy as it receives (heat budget balance).

Explanation

  • Temperature inversion: temperature rises with height near the ground, trapping pollutants (common on winter nights).
  • Greenhouse gases absorb outgoing long-wave radiation.
  • Insolation is highest near the tropics, not exactly at the equator, due to clouds.
  • Conduction, convection, advection and radiation transfer heat.
  • Jet streams flow near the tropopause.

Step by step

  1. Identify the concept, law or fact asked.
  2. Recall the definition, formula, example or year.
  3. Apply it and eliminate mismatched options.

Examples

  • Statement: "The ozone layer lies mainly in the troposphere." → Incorrect (stratosphere).
  • Statement: "The troposphere is thicker at the equator than at the poles." → Correct.
  • Statement: "Temperature inversions trap pollutants near the ground." → Correct.

Traps and advanced points

  • Trap: Placing ozone in the troposphere.
  • Trap: Saying the mesosphere is warmest.
  • Trap: Reversing albedo meaning.

Quick revision

  • N₂ 78, O₂ 21, Ar 0.93, CO₂ 0.04.
  • Ozone in stratosphere.
  • Troposphere 8–18 km.
