Heat & Temperature
General Science · Physics
Useful for: Railway RRB, OSSC RHT — Regular High School Teacher, OSEPA Upper Primary — Science, OSSC Science, OSSSC Govt TGT Science — PCM, SSB Lecturer (Degree Colleges), SSB TGT PCM
Overview
Heat is energy in transit; temperature measures how hot a body is. Heat moves by conduction, convection and radiation.
Key points
- K = °C + 273; °F = (9/5)°C + 32.
- Specific heat: heat needed to raise 1 kg by 1 °C; water has a high specific heat.
- Latent heat is absorbed or released during a change of state without temperature change.
- Conduction (solids), convection (fluids), radiation (no medium needed).
- Water is densest at 4 °C (anomalous expansion).
Explanation
- Normal body temperature ≈ 37 °C = 98.6 °F.
- −40 is the same on the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales.
- Sea breeze blows from sea to land in the day due to convection.
- Dark surfaces absorb and emit radiation better.
Step by step
- Identify the concept or law involved.
- Recall the definition, unit or formula.
- Check units and the direction of the effect before choosing.
Examples
- 100 °C = 373 K.
- 37 °C = (9/5 × 37) + 32 = 98.6 °F.
- −40 °C = −40 °F.
Traps and advanced points
- Trap: Saying temperature rises during melting.
- Trap: Thinking radiation needs a medium.
- Trap: Adding 32 before multiplying.
Quick revision
- K = °C + 273.
- °F = 1.8°C + 32.
- Water densest at 4 °C.
