Fire & Emergency Basics
Basic Science & Engineering · Safety, Environment & IT
Useful for: Railway RRB
Overview
Fires need heat, fuel and oxygen; removing any one puts them out, and the extinguisher must match the fire class.
Key points
- Fire triangle: heat, fuel, oxygen.
- Class A (wood, paper, cloth): water.
- Class B (flammable liquids): foam, CO₂ or dry powder.
- Electrical fires: CO₂ or dry chemical powder — never water.
- PASS: Pull the pin, Aim at the base, Squeeze, Sweep.
Explanation
- Class D fires (metals) need special dry powder.
- Smother small oil fires with a lid or sand.
- Evacuate calmly by marked exits; do not use lifts during a fire.
- Emergency numbers: 101 (fire), 112 (all emergencies).
Step by step
- Identify the concept, tool or rule involved.
- Recall the definition, value or procedure.
- Check units, safety logic and the direction of the effect.
Examples
- The correct extinguisher for a petrol fire → foam or CO₂.
- In PASS, the extinguisher is aimed at → the base of the fire.
- The fire emergency number in India → 101.
Traps and advanced points
- Trap: Using water on oil or electrical fires.
- Trap: Aiming at the flames instead of the base.
- Trap: Using lifts during evacuation.
Quick revision
- Heat–fuel–oxygen.
- PASS.
- 101 fire, 112 emergency.
