Ethics & Human Interface
GS-IV: Ethics, Integrity & Aptitude
Useful for: UPSC Civil Services
Overview
Ethics studies right and wrong conduct; in public life it guides how officials treat citizens, use power and resolve conflicts of interest.
Key points
- Morality is a person’s or group’s sense of right and wrong; ethics is the systematic study and application of such principles; law is the enforceable minimum.
- Something can be legal but unethical (e.g. exploiting a loophole) or ethical but technically illegal (civil disobedience against unjust laws).
- Determinants of ethics: family upbringing, social norms, education, religion and culture, law and institutions, personal experience.
- Consequences of ethics in public life: trust, legitimacy, efficient service delivery, reduced corruption.
- Ethics in private relationships (family, friends) and public relationships (citizens, colleagues) can conflict — e.g. favouring relatives.
- Human interface means applying ethics to real human situations rather than abstract rules.
