Introduction to Linear Polynomials – Class 9 Mathematics notes, important questions and MCQs
NCERT Class 9 Mathematics, chapter 2. Notes, key terms, important questions with answers and MCQs.
Chapter overview
A linear polynomial has degree 1, like ax + b (a ≠ 0). Its graph is a straight line and it has exactly one zero, x = −b/a.
Polynomials
- A polynomial has terms with whole-number powers of the variable.
- Degree = highest power: constant (0), linear (1), quadratic (2), cubic (3).
- Terms: monomial (1 term), binomial (2), trinomial (3).
Linear polynomials
- General form ax + b with a ≠ 0.
- Zero: the value of x where ax + b = 0, i.e. x = −b/a.
- Graph of y = ax + b is a straight line crossing the x-axis at the zero.
Value and remainder
- p(k) means put x = k in p(x).
- Remainder theorem: when p(x) is divided by (x − a), the remainder is p(a).
- (x − a) is a factor of p(x) if p(a) = 0.
Key terms
- Coefficient
- the number multiplying a variable term
- Zero of a polynomial
- a value of x making p(x) = 0
- Linear polynomial
- a polynomial of degree 1
Formulas
- Zero of ax + b is x = −b/a
- Remainder on dividing p(x) by (x − a) = p(a)
Important questions with answers
Find the zero of p(x) = 3x − 12.2 marks
3x − 12 = 0 gives x = 4. Check: p(4) = 12 − 12 = 0.
A taxi charges ₹50 plus ₹15 per km. Write the fare as a linear polynomial in distance x and find the fare for 8 km.3 marks
Fare f(x) = 15x + 50. For x = 8: f(8) = 120 + 50 = ₹170.
For p(x) = 2x + 6: (i) find p(0), p(1) and p(−3); (ii) find its zero; (iii) describe its graph and where it cuts the axes.5 marks
(i) p(0) = 6, p(1) = 8, p(−3) = 0. (ii) 2x + 6 = 0 gives x = −3. (iii) The graph is a straight line with slope 2. It cuts the y-axis at (0, 6) and the x-axis at the zero, (−3, 0). As x increases by 1, p(x) increases by 2.
Quick revision
- Degree 1 → linear → one zero.
- Graph of a linear polynomial is a straight line.
- p(a) = 0 ⇔ (x − a) is a factor.
Exam tips
- x + 1/x or √x are not polynomials (powers must be whole numbers).
- A non-zero constant polynomial has no zero.
