Power Play – Class 8 Mathematics notes, important questions and MCQs
NCERT Class 8 Mathematics, chapter 2. Notes, key terms, important questions with answers and MCQs.
Chapter overview
Exponents are a short way to write repeated multiplication. Laws of exponents and standard form make very large and very small numbers easy to handle.
Laws of exponents
- aᵐ × aⁿ = aᵐ⁺ⁿ; aᵐ ÷ aⁿ = aᵐ⁻ⁿ; (aᵐ)ⁿ = aᵐⁿ.
- (ab)ⁿ = aⁿbⁿ; a⁰ = 1 (a ≠ 0); a⁻ⁿ = 1/aⁿ.
- Doubling grows fast: 2¹⁰ = 1024.
Standard form
- Write a number as k × 10ⁿ with 1 ≤ k < 10.
- Large: 3,80,000 = 3.8 × 10⁵. Small: 0.00045 = 4.5 × 10⁻⁴.
- Speed of light ≈ 3 × 10⁸ m/s.
Key terms
- Base
- the number being multiplied repeatedly
- Exponent
- how many times the base is multiplied
- Standard form
- k × 10ⁿ with 1 ≤ k < 10
Formulas
- aᵐ × aⁿ = aᵐ⁺ⁿ
- a⁻ⁿ = 1/aⁿ
Important questions with answers
Simplify 5⁴ × 5³ ÷ 5⁵.2 marks
5^(4 + 3 − 5) = 5² = 25.
Write 3,84,00,000 and 0.0062 in standard form.3 marks
3.84 × 10⁷ and 6.2 × 10⁻³.
A paper is folded in half again and again. How many layers are there after 10 folds? If each sheet is 0.1 mm thick, how thick is the stack in cm? Express in powers of 2 and 10.5 marks
Layers double each fold: 2¹⁰ = 1,024 layers. Thickness = 1,024 × 0.1 mm = 102.4 mm = 10.24 cm ≈ 1.024 × 10¹ cm.
Quick revision
- Any non-zero number to the power 0 is 1.
- 2¹⁰ ≈ one thousand.
- Standard form needs 1 ≤ k < 10.
Exam tips
- Negative exponent does not make the number negative — it makes a reciprocal.
- Count decimal moves to find the power of 10.
