Working with Fractions – Class 7 Mathematics notes, important questions and MCQs
NCERT Class 7 Mathematics, chapter 8. Notes, key terms, important questions with answers and MCQs.
Chapter overview
Fractions are multiplied and divided using simple rules. "Of" means multiply, and dividing by a fraction means multiplying by its reciprocal.
Multiplication
- a/b × c/d = (a × c)/(b × d); simplify before multiplying when possible.
- "of" means ×: 2/3 of 12 = 8.
- A proper fraction times a number gives less than the number.
Division
- Reciprocal of a/b is b/a.
- a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c.
- Mixed numbers: convert to improper fractions first (2½ = 5/2).
Key terms
- Reciprocal
- the number which multiplied by the given number gives 1
- Improper fraction
- numerator greater than or equal to denominator
- Mixed fraction
- a whole number and a proper fraction together, e.g. 2¾
Formulas
- a/b ÷ c/d = ad/bc
- Reciprocal of a/b = b/a
Important questions with answers
Find the reciprocal of 5/8 and of 3.2 marks
Reciprocal of 5/8 is 8/5; of 3 is 1/3.
Find 2¼ × 1⅓.3 marks
9/4 × 4/3 = 36/12 = 3.
A rope 12½ m long is cut into pieces of 2½ m each. How many pieces are there? If each piece costs ₹3¾ per metre, what is the cost of one piece and of all pieces?5 marks
Pieces = 12½ ÷ 2½ = 25/2 × 2/5 = 5. Cost of one piece = 2½ × 3¾ = 5/2 × 15/4 = 75/8 = ₹9⅜ (₹9.375). All pieces = 5 × 75/8 = 375/8 = ₹46⅞ (₹46.875).
Quick revision
- "Of" = multiply.
- Divide = multiply by reciprocal.
- Convert mixed numbers first.
Exam tips
- Cancel common factors across numerator and denominator first.
- Dividing by a fraction less than 1 gives a bigger answer.
