हिंदी में पढ़ें

Chapter overview

Science is a way of exploring the world by asking questions, observing carefully and testing ideas. Everyone can think like a scientist.

Thinking like a scientist

  • Be curious: ask "why", "how" and "what if".
  • Observe with senses and simple tools (hand lens, ruler, thermometer).
  • Make a guess, test it, and check if the result supports it.

Science around us

  • Science explains cooking, weather, plants, machines and our body.
  • Scientists share findings so that others can check them.
  • Safety first: handle tools carefully and ask an adult for help.

Key terms

Observation
noticing something using the senses or tools
Experiment
a test done to check an idea
Hypothesis
a possible answer to a question that can be tested

Formulas

  • Question → guess → test → result → conclusion

Important questions with answers

Name two things a scientist does to find answers.2 marks

Observes carefully and does experiments (tests ideas); also records results and discusses them with others.

Why should an experiment be repeated?3 marks

Repeating checks that the result was not due to chance or a mistake. If we get the same result again, we can trust it more.

Plan a simple experiment to find out whether plants need sunlight to stay green. Mention what you change, what you keep the same and what you observe.5 marks

Take two similar potted plants of the same kind. Keep one in sunlight and the other in a dark cupboard (changed factor: sunlight). Give both the same amount of water, the same soil and pot size (kept the same). Observe the leaves daily for a week and record the colour. The plant in the dark turns pale or yellow, showing plants need sunlight to stay green.

Quick revision

  • Science begins with curiosity.
  • Experiments test ideas.
  • Safety first.

Exam tips

  • Write what you see, not what you expect to see.
  • Repeat a test to be sure.
