Understanding Data – Class 12 Computer Science notes, important questions and MCQs
NCERT Class 12 Computer Science, chapter 7. Notes, key terms, important questions with answers and MCQs.
Chapter overview
Data is a collection of facts, figures and observations that can be processed to obtain information. Data may be structured or unstructured and is collected, stored, processed and analysed to support decisions. Statistical techniques such as measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and measures of variability (range, standard deviation) are used to summarise and understand data.
Data collection, storage and processing
- Structured data is organised in a fixed format such as tables; unstructured data has no predefined format, such as images, videos and text messages.
- Data is collected through surveys, sensors, transactions and online forms; it is stored on hard disks, SSDs, servers and the cloud; data processing includes input, processing (such as sorting, calculating and summarising) and output.
- Data must be checked for accuracy and completeness; files such as CSV are common for storing tabular data.
Statistical techniques
- Mean is the sum of values divided by the number of values; median is the middle value of sorted data (average of the two middle values when n is even); mode is the most frequent value.
- Range is the difference between the maximum and minimum values; standard deviation measures how much values spread from the mean, as the square root of the average of squared deviations.
- For the data 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9: mean = 5, median = 4.5, mode = 4, range = 7 and population standard deviation = 2. Python's statistics module provides mean(), median(), mode() and pstdev().
Key terms
- Data
- raw facts and figures that can be processed
- Structured data
- data organised in a fixed format such as rows and columns
- Mean
- the sum of values divided by their count
- Median
- the middle value of sorted data
- Standard deviation
- a measure of spread of values around the mean
Important questions with answers
Distinguish between structured and unstructured data.2 marks
Structured data is organised in a predefined format, such as rows and columns in a table or database, and is easy to search and analyse, for example student marks. Unstructured data has no predefined format, such as emails, images, audio and videos, and needs special tools to analyse.
Find the mean, median and mode of 3, 7, 7, 2, 9, 7, 5.3 marks
Sum = 40 and n = 7, so mean = 40 ÷ 7 ≈ 5.71. Sorted data: 2, 3, 5, 7, 7, 7, 9, so median = 7 (the 4th value). Mode = 7, since it occurs three times.
Explain the measures of central tendency and variability with an example.5 marks
Measures of central tendency give a single value that represents the centre of a data set. The mean is the sum of all values divided by the number of values; it uses all data but is affected by extreme values. The median is the middle value when data is arranged in order; when there is an even number of values, it is the average of the two middle values; it is not affected much by extreme values. The mode is the value that occurs most often; a data set may have no mode or more than one mode. Measures of variability show how spread out the data is. The range is the difference between the maximum and minimum values; it is simple but depends only on two values. The standard deviation measures the average distance of values from the mean: find the mean, subtract it from each value, square the differences, find their average (variance) and take the square root. Example: for 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9, the sum is 40 and n is 8, so the mean is 5. Sorted, the middle values are 4 and 5, so the median is 4.5. The mode is 4. The range is 9 - 2 = 7. Squared deviations are 9, 1, 1, 1, 0, 0, 4 and 16, which sum to 32; the variance is 32 ÷ 8 = 4, so the standard deviation is 2. In Python, statistics.mean(), median(), mode() and pstdev() compute these values.
Quick revision
- Structured and unstructured data.
- Data collection, storage and processing.
- Mean, median, mode.

Show answer
Answer: (c) unstructured data. They have no fixed tabular format.
The difference between the largest and smallest values is the
- mean
- median
