Explain the dimensions of business environment and the impact of the 1991 economic reforms on Indian business.5 marks

Business environment has five main dimensions. The economic environment includes interest rates, inflation, disposable income, stock market indices and economic policies, which affect demand and costs. The social environment includes customs, traditions, values, lifestyle, education and population trends, such as rising health consciousness. The technological environment includes new products, processes and digital technology, which create opportunities and make old products obsolete. The political environment includes political stability and the government's attitude towards business. The legal environment includes laws, regulations and court judgements, such as the Companies Act and consumer protection laws. In 1991 India introduced the New Industrial Policy based on liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation. Licensing was abolished for most industries, the role of the public sector was reduced, and foreign investment and trade were opened up. Its impact on business was significant: competition increased from domestic and foreign firms; customers became more demanding, with more choice and quality; technology changed rapidly; firms had to adapt to change and invest in developing human resources; market orientation replaced production orientation; and public sector units lost budgetary support and had to become efficient.
