Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants – Class 12 Biology notes, important questions and MCQs
NCERT Class 12 Biology, chapter 1. Notes, key terms, important questions with answers and MCQs.
Chapter overview
Flowers carry the reproductive organs. Pollen from the anther reaches the stigma (pollination), the male gametes fuse with the egg and polar nuclei (double fertilisation), and seeds and fruits develop.
Pre-fertilisation
- Stamen = anther + filament; microspore mother cells undergo meiosis to form pollen grains (male gametophyte).
- Pistil = stigma + style + ovary; the ovule's megaspore mother cell forms the embryo sac (7-celled, 8-nucleate).
- Pollination: self (autogamy, geitonogamy) or cross (xenogamy) by wind, water or animals.
Double fertilisation and after
- One male gamete + egg → zygote (2n); the other + two polar nuclei → primary endosperm nucleus (3n).
- Endosperm nourishes the embryo; ovule → seed, ovary → fruit.
- Apomixis forms seeds without fertilisation; parthenocarpy forms seedless fruits.
Key terms
- Double fertilisation
- syngamy plus triple fusion, unique to flowering plants
- Apomixis
- production of seeds without fertilisation
- Exine
- tough outer wall of pollen made of sporopollenin
Important questions with answers
What is the function of the filiform apparatus?2 marks
The filiform apparatus at the tips of the synergids guides the pollen tube into the synergid of the embryo sac.
Differentiate between autogamy, geitonogamy and xenogamy.3 marks
Autogamy: pollen of a flower reaches the stigma of the same flower. Geitonogamy: pollen reaches another flower on the same plant (genetically like self-pollination). Xenogamy: pollen reaches a flower on a different plant, bringing genetic variation.
Describe the structure of a mature embryo sac and explain double fertilisation with a labelled description.5 marks
The mature embryo sac is 7-celled and 8-nucleate: at the micropylar end, the egg apparatus (one egg cell and two synergids with filiform apparatus); at the chalazal end, three antipodal cells; in the centre, a large central cell with two polar nuclei. The pollen tube enters a synergid and releases two male gametes. One fuses with the egg (syngamy) to form the diploid zygote, which becomes the embryo. The other fuses with the two polar nuclei (triple fusion) to form the triploid primary endosperm nucleus, which develops into the endosperm. Because two fusions occur, it is called double fertilisation.
Quick revision
- Triple fusion gives the 3n endosperm.
- Geitonogamy is genetically self-pollination.
- Sporopollenin is the most resistant organic material.
Exam tips
- Remember the embryo sac as 7 cells, 8 nuclei: egg apparatus (3), antipodals (3), central cell (2 polar nuclei).
- Learn the outbreeding devices: dichogamy (anther and stigma mature at different times), herkogamy, self-incompatibility, and unisexual flowers (dioecy).
