सार

1947 के बाद भारत ने रियासतों का एकीकरण किया, राज्यों का भाषायी आधार पर पुनर्गठन किया और लोकतंत्र तथा विकास के लिए संस्थाएँ बनाईं।

मुख्य बिंदु

• सरदार पटेल और वी. पी. मेनन ने विलय-पत्रों के माध्यम से रियासतों का एकीकरण किया; हैदराबाद ऑपरेशन पोलो (1948) के बाद शामिल हुआ।
• पोट्टि श्रीरामुलु के अनशन के बाद 1953 में आंध्र राज्य बना।
• राज्य पुनर्गठन आयोग (फ़ज़ल अली, 1953) से राज्य पुनर्गठन अधिनियम, 1956 बना।
• पहली पंचवर्षीय योजना 1951 में शुरू हुई।
• गोवा 1961 में मुक्त हुआ; सिक्किम 1975 में राज्य बना (36वाँ संशोधन)।
• आपातकाल (1975–77) ने लोकतांत्रिक संस्थाओं की परीक्षा ली।
