Sequences & Series
Mathematics
Useful for: UPSC NDA/NA
Overview
Sequences are ordered lists of numbers; arithmetic and geometric progressions have standard formulas for terms and sums.
Key points
- AP nth term: a + (n − 1)d; sum: n/2 [2a + (n − 1)d].
- GP nth term: a rⁿ⁻¹; sum: a(rⁿ − 1)/(r − 1) for r ≠ 1.
- Infinite GP sum = a/(1 − r) when |r| < 1.
- Sum of first n natural numbers = n(n + 1)/2.
- For positive numbers, AM ≥ GM.
- Sum of squares of first n natural numbers = n(n + 1)(2n + 1)/6.
