Overview
National income accounting measures output (GDP, GVA, GNP, NNP) by production, income and expenditure methods, at current or constant prices.
Key points
- GDP = GVA at basic prices + product taxes − product subsidies.
- GNP = GDP + net factor income from abroad; NNP = GNP − depreciation.
- NNP at factor cost is called national income.
- Real GDP uses constant prices; nominal GDP uses current prices; GDP deflator = nominal ÷ real × 100.
- India’s current national-accounts series uses base year 2011–12; estimates are released by the National Statistics Office (MoSPI).
- Methods: production (value added), income (factor incomes) and expenditure (C + I + G + NX).
Explanation
- Per capita income = national income ÷ population.
- Transfer payments (pensions, subsidies to households) are excluded from GDP.
- Intermediate goods are excluded to avoid double counting.
- GDP measures output, not welfare or distribution.
- Green GDP adjusts for environmental depletion.
Step by step
- Identify the concept, law or fact asked.
- Recall the definition, formula, example or year.
- Apply it and eliminate mismatched options.
Examples
- Statement: "GDP at market prices equals GVA at basic prices plus net product taxes." → Correct.
- Statement: "National income in India means GDP at market prices." → Incorrect (NNP at factor cost).
- Example: GDP 200, net factor income from abroad −5, depreciation 15 → GNP 195, NNP 180.
Traps and advanced points
- Trap: Adding depreciation instead of subtracting.
- Trap: Counting transfer payments.
- Trap: Mixing nominal and real growth.
Quick revision
- GVA → GDP → GNP → NNP.
- NNP at FC = national income.
- Base year 2011–12.
