Overview

The Indian monsoon is a seasonal reversal of winds driven by differential heating, the shifting ITCZ and upper-air circulation, influenced by ocean–atmosphere patterns.

Key points

  • The south-west monsoon usually reaches Kerala around 1 June.
  • Two branches: the Arabian Sea branch and the Bay of Bengal branch.
  • The Tibetan Plateau’s heating and the tropical easterly jet strengthen the monsoon.
  • El Niño tends to weaken the Indian monsoon; a positive Indian Ocean Dipole tends to strengthen it.
  • The retreating (north-east) monsoon brings much of Tamil Nadu’s rain in October–November.
  • Western disturbances bring winter rain and snow to north-west India.

Explanation

  • Mawsynram and Cherrapunji (Meghalaya) receive very heavy rainfall due to orographic lift.
  • Pre-monsoon showers: mango showers (Kerala, Karnataka) and kalbaisakhi (nor’westers in Bengal).
  • Monsoon breaks occur when the trough shifts towards the Himalaya.
  • Leeward areas (e.g. rain-shadow of the Western Ghats) stay dry.
  • IMD issues long-range monsoon forecasts.

Step by step

  1. Identify the concept, law or fact asked.
  2. Recall the definition, formula, example or year.
  3. Apply it and eliminate mismatched options.

Examples

  • Statement: "El Niño usually strengthens the Indian monsoon." → Incorrect.
  • Statement: "Tamil Nadu gets much of its rain from the north-east monsoon." → Correct.
  • Statement: "Western disturbances bring winter rain to north-west India." → Correct.

Traps and advanced points

  • Trap: Reversing El Niño’s effect.
  • Trap: Giving Tamil Nadu’s main rain to June–September.
  • Trap: Mixing kalbaisakhi and mango showers.

Quick revision

  • Onset Kerala ~1 June.
  • El Niño weakens; +IOD helps.
  • NE monsoon → Tamil Nadu.
