Analytical Geometry
Mathematics
Useful for: UPSC NDA/NA
Overview
Analytical (coordinate) geometry describes points, lines and curves using coordinates and equations.
Key points
- Distance between (x₁, y₁) and (x₂, y₂) = √[(x₂ − x₁)² + (y₂ − y₁)²].
- Slope m = (y₂ − y₁)/(x₂ − x₁); parallel lines have equal slopes; perpendicular slopes multiply to −1.
- Line forms: y = mx + c; point-slope y − y₁ = m(x − x₁).
- Circle with centre (h, k) and radius r: (x − h)² + (y − k)² = r².
- Parabola y² = 4ax has focus (a, 0).
- Eccentricity: e < 1 ellipse, e = 1 parabola, e > 1 hyperbola.
