Overview

An analogy asks you to find the relationship in one pair and apply the same relationship to another.

Key points

  • Common relationships: worker–workplace, tool–user, product–raw material, part–whole, cause–effect, synonym/antonym.
  • State the relationship as a precise sentence ("A doctor works in a hospital").
  • The order matters: Doctor : Hospital is not the same as Hospital : Doctor.
  • When two options fit, choose the one with the more specific relationship.
  • Units and instruments: Thermometer : Temperature :: Barometer : Pressure.

Explanation

  • Check the category of both words (person/place/object) — the answer must keep the same categories.
  • Degree relationships: Warm : Hot :: Cool : Cold (intensity).
  • Functional relationships: Pen : Write :: Knife : Cut.
  • Avoid answers linked only by association (e.g. Doctor : Medicine for Doctor : Hospital).

Step by step

  1. Find the exact relationship in the given pair or pattern.
  2. Apply the same relationship to the question part.
  3. Check the chosen option against every condition.

Examples

  • Doctor : Hospital :: Teacher : School (person : workplace).
  • Thermometer : Temperature :: Odometer : Distance (instrument : what it measures).
  • Cotton : Cloth :: Clay : Pot (raw material : product).

Traps and advanced points

  • Trap: Reversing the order of the pair.
  • Trap: Choosing a word that is merely associated rather than in the same relationship.
  • Trap: Ignoring the category of the words.

Quick revision

  • Make one precise sentence for the pair.
  • Order matters.
  • Same categories on both sides.
