Useful for: SSC CGL

Overview

Tier-II algebra uses identities, quadratic equations and symmetric expressions in two variables.

Key points

  • a³ + b³ = (a + b)³ − 3ab(a + b).
  • x² + y² = (x − y)² + 2xy = (x + y)² − 2xy.
  • For ax² + bx + c = 0: sum of roots = −b/a, product = c/a.
  • Discriminant b² − 4ac: positive → two real roots; zero → equal roots; negative → no real roots.
  • If a + b + c = 0, then a³ + b³ + c³ = 3abc.

Explanation

  • Form a quadratic from roots α and β: x² − (α + β)x + αβ = 0.
  • Use substitution of simple values to test identity-based options.
  • For x + 1/x type expressions, square and cube step by step.
  • Linear equations in two variables: check consistency using coefficient ratios.

Step by step

  1. Identify the concept and the formula that links the given values.
  2. Solve step by step, keeping units consistent.
  3. Check the answer against the options and by a quick estimate.

Examples

  • a + b = 5, ab = 6 → a³ + b³ = 125 − 3 × 6 × 5 = 35.
  • x − y = 3, xy = 10 → x² + y² = 9 + 20 = 29.
  • x² − 5x + 6 = 0 → roots 2 and 3; sum 5, product 6.

Traps and advanced points

  • Trap: Sign errors in −b/a.
  • Trap: Using (a + b)² in place of (a + b)³ identities.
  • Trap: Forgetting the 2xy term.

Quick revision

  • Express in a + b and ab.
  • Sum −b/a, product c/a.
  • Discriminant decides roots.
