Chapter overview
India's culture grew from many roots. The Vedas are among the oldest texts in the world, and the Upanishads explored deep questions about the self and reality. Buddhism and Jainism arose around the 6th–5th century BCE, and folk and tribal traditions added rich beliefs and practices. These systems interacted and shaped one another.
The Vedas and Vedic thought
- There are four Vedas: Rigveda (the oldest), Samaveda, Yajurveda and Atharvaveda; they were passed down orally for centuries.
- The Rigveda has hymns to deities such as Agni, Indra and Varuna and prayers for peace and well-being.
- The Upanishads discuss Brahman (the ultimate reality) and Atman (the self) and encourage questioning and reflection.
Buddhism and Jainism
- Siddhartha Gautama was born at Lumbini, attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya and became the Buddha; he gave his first sermon at Sarnath.
- The Buddha taught the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, a middle way between luxury and harsh self-denial.
- Vardhamana Mahavira, the 24th tirthankara of Jainism, taught ahimsa (non-violence), truth, non-stealing, chastity and non-possession.
Folk and tribal traditions

Describe the main cultural roots of India: Vedic thought, Buddhism, Jainism and folk traditions, and how they interacted.5 marks
The Vedas, especially the Rigveda, contain hymns and prayers and reflect a society that valued rituals, knowledge and harmony with nature; later the Upanishads raised deep questions about Brahman, the ultimate reality, and Atman, the self, and encouraged discussion between teachers and students. Around the 6th–5th century BCE, the Buddha taught the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, while Mahavira taught ahimsa, truth, non-stealing, chastity and non-possession; both welcomed people of all backgrounds and used local languages. Alongside these, folk and tribal communities followed their own traditions of worshipping nature, sacred groves, rivers and local deities, with rich songs and festivals. These systems borrowed ideas from one another: values such as non-violence, respect for nature, debate and learning spread across traditions, creating the varied but connected culture of India.
