हिंदी में पढ़ें

Chapter overview

Nature gives us air, water, soil, sunlight, forests, minerals and fuels. Some resources renew themselves; others can run out, so we must use them wisely.

Types of resources

  • Renewable / inexhaustible: sunlight, wind, water (when not polluted or over-used).
  • Non-renewable / exhaustible: coal, petroleum, natural gas, minerals — formed over millions of years.
  • Fossil fuels release carbon dioxide and pollutants when burnt.

Conservation

  • Use solar and wind energy; switch off lights and fans when not needed.
  • Save water: fix leaks, harvest rainwater, reuse water for plants.
  • Protect forests and soil: plant trees, avoid plastic, follow reduce–reuse–recycle.

Key terms

Natural resource
useful material or energy obtained from nature
Renewable resource
resource that can be replaced naturally
Fossil fuel
fuel formed from remains of ancient plants and animals (coal, petroleum)

Formulas

  • Reduce → Reuse → Recycle

Important questions with answers

Give two examples each of renewable and non-renewable resources.2 marks

Renewable: sunlight, wind (also water, forests if managed). Non-renewable: coal, petroleum (also natural gas, minerals).

Why should we use fossil fuels carefully?3 marks

They take millions of years to form and will run out if overused. Burning them also releases smoke and gases that pollute the air and warm the Earth.

Explain how air, water and soil are treasures for living things, and suggest five ways a student can conserve natural resources.5 marks

Air gives oxygen for breathing and carbon dioxide for plants; water is needed for drinking, farming and all life processes; soil supports plants and is home to many organisms, and grows our food. Ways to conserve: switch off lights and fans when not needed; walk, cycle or use public transport; close taps and reuse water; use both sides of paper and recycle; plant trees and avoid single-use plastic.

Quick revision

  • Sunlight and wind are renewable.
  • Coal and petroleum are exhaustible.
  • Conserve resources for the future.

Exam tips

  • Coal and petroleum are called fossil fuels because they come from fossils.
  • CNG and LPG are cleaner fuels than petrol and diesel.
