भूकंप, सुनामी, ज्वालामुखी, चक्रवात और चरम जलवायु घटनाएँ आपदाओं को आकार देती हैं; उनकी प्रक्रिया समझना तैयारी में सहायक है।

• भारत के भूकंपीय क्षेत्र II से V तक हैं; क्षेत्र V सबसे ख़तरनाक है (हिमालय, पूर्वोत्तर, कच्छ, अंडमान)।
• 2004 की हिंद महासागर सुनामी सुमात्रा के पास एक विशाल समुद्र-तल भूकंप से उत्पन्न हुई।
• उष्णकटिबंधीय चक्रवातों के लिए समुद्र-सतह का तापमान लगभग 26.5 °C से अधिक चाहिए।
